While we're on the topic of kidney stones, my DB (Dear Brother) had a kidney stone and he claims the pain is worse than childbirth (I'm unclear as to how exactly he knows what the pain of childbirth is like, but whatever). Now, I've been through childbirth and it was pretty darn painful. Kinda hard to believe a kidney stone is worse than that.
If you are a woman and you've been through childbirth AND had a kidney stone, I'd love to hear your assessment of the pain. Enlighten us, please!
Correction: I was just recounting what some of the nurses told me that day, that the pain is of the same order of magnitude as childbirth. Obviously YMMV, depending on duration and such.

Being DSIL, I know DB quite well. I would have to suggest that his tolerance for pain (or lack thereof) might have contributed to the nurses' comment. DB was also given pain relief rather quickly. Whereas women in labor are often encouraged to avoid medicinal pain relief. I don't remember any nurse telling DB to relax, focus on a spot on the wall, and breath to make the pain diminish! - Of course none of this is directed at DD! I am completely impressed at her desire to jump straight into the car and travel!
ReplyDeleteAnyone for a kidney stone during childbirth?
ReplyDeleteI must defend the poster's DB and his tolerance for pain. I once dropped a chair on DB while he was asleep and he didn't even wake up. Now if that's not tolerance for pain, I don't know what is!
ReplyDeleteIn response to Kevin: was that truly a tolerance for pain or a lack of tolerance for alcohol?
ReplyDeleteI don't know about kidney stone's, but I swear my gall bladder attacks were worse than labor/childbirth and I had an all natural childbirth. Of course I think it was because I knew my pain for childbirth would be over shortly where I didn't know for sure when my gall bladder attacks would finally be over with.
ReplyDeleteI've given birth to two children and had two bouts with kidney stones. The kidney stones were MUCH more painful! Labor contractions come and go, but kidney stone pain is constant and brutal. I was able to give birth without pain medication, but I was crying uncontrollably with my kidney stones until I was given morphine.
ReplyDeleteI have not yet gone through childbirth, but I have passed over 300 stones in the last 14 years. Sometimes it's a walk in the park, and sometimes, like the woman above, I'm crawling on the floor in pain wishing I would just die.
