We took time to visit the Nubble Light which is not far from Ogunquit. You can't actually go into the lighthouse - it's on a little island just off shore, but there's a park across from it with parking, a little gift shop, and a small cafe, and it also affords a lovely view of the lighthouse. There are some nice big rocks you can climb down to and watch the waves crashing if you wish. It was a very picturesque spot. The park itself was partly surrounded by these wild rose bushes. They were so fragrant I could smell them as soon as we stepped out of the car.

I would like to visit the Portland Head Light sometime, but we didn't get around to it this trip. We have in the past visited the Pemaquid Point Lighthouse, a few times actually. That is a really charming lighthouse to visit and they even have a little museum (but that's when we stayed in Boothbay Harbor, further up the coast). We've sat for hours on the rocks there just watching the waves crash. I'd also like to get back up to Acadia National Park. I was there once as a kid, but I'd love to go back, I have really nice memories of it. Except one. We had the misfortune to stay in a hotel very close to the ferry that leaves for Nova Scotia early in the morning. Unbeknownst to us, they blow a VERY LOUD HORN each morning. Never had to set the alarm on THAT vacation!
Anybody else a Maine Lover like me? Where have you visited?
Oh that looks just wonderful! How very pretty.
ReplyDeleteI love Maine. I have never been there, but I love it. It's rugged, it's cool, and it has lower taxes than NY. Love it.
ReplyDeleteI did visit Maine in college. Acadia National Park. Stupid me, I was expecting to be able to swim in the ocean. But what I remember most is how people pronounce "Bar Harbour".
ReplyDeleteI've not visited Maine, but I know there are lots of lighthouses up and down the east coast...I wish I could start at the "top" and just make my way to the "bottom"...taking time to see all the lighthouses, parks and such...Nubble Light is very lovely...very picturesque. Thanks for sharing!
