Are the People Who Invented New Coke at it Again??

If you're at least as old as me, you remember the whole "New Coke" debacle.  Everyone loved Coca Cola the way it was.  Nobody wanted "new" Coke.  (If you're unfamiliar with this disaster, you can read about New Coke at Wikipedia.)

Well, someone equally as brilliant is at it again.

They are now making Egg Beaters (the product that is used by people with cholesterol problems as an egg substitute) with "a touch of" YOLK.

THE WHOLE POINT OF EATING EGG BEATERS IS TO AVOID CHOLESTEROL.  ADDING YOLK ADDS CHOLESTEROL.

WHY ON EARTH WOULD THEY DO THIS?

They say it's to improve flavor.

It's like putting "just a little" sugar in sugar free cookies for diabetics.  To make them, you know - taste better.

How silly would weight loss pills that make you slightly hungry be?

How about decaffinated coffee with a "touch of caffiene"?

Now I'll admit, Egg Beaters don't taste very good.  I'll acknowledge that, and I applaud their effort to make them taste better. (However, did they forget that they already make them in flavors like Southwestern, Cheese and Chive and Vegetable?)

But if you're going to add something to make them taste better, don't add cholesterol - to avoid cholesterol is why we suffer through eating the Egg Beaters in the first place!

I predict failure and I say:

The end.

  1. To play devil's advocate, the American Heart Association recommends limiting cholesterol intake to 200 mg per day or less, and a serving of Egg Beaters with some yolk has 50 mg per serving, which could fit into that lifestyle. Adding some yolk adds quite a bit of nutrition...the whites provide only protein, where as one 1/4 cup serving of "touch of yolk" also provides 85g of potassium, 45% of slenium, 45% of riboflavin, as well as Vitamin A, Calcium, Iron, Vitamin E, Thiamin, Folic Acid, Vitamin B12, Pantothenic Acid, Phosphorus, Zinc, and Copper.
So, some may think that the benefits outweigh the risks.
If I'm wrong, the yolk's on me. :)

  2. By the way, the level of 200 mg of dietary cholesterol or less is what the American Heart Association recommends for folks with heart disease. For everyone else, they recommend 300 mg or less.
Also, as a comparison, a typical egg yolk has 210 mg of cholesterol.

  3. DH still wants to eat the occasional pizza or chicken wings, so although Egg Beaters with a Touch of Yolk could "fit into that lifestyle" we'll never buy them. In fact DH was told by the Dr. he's "allowed" to eat three eggs per week. So theoretically he could eat actual eggs if he wanted to. But he doesn't because he wants to reduce his cholesterol intake as much as possible so he can eat something junky now and then. I suspect a lot of others with high cholesterol feel the same way. BAD IDEA JEANS.

  4. LOL I respect and applaud your position. Pizza and chicken wings are very important things!!! I'd save the cholesterol for ice-cream! :D

  5. I challenge anyone to have 1/4 cup of eggbeaters and be full. You can barely even cook 1/4 cup of eggbeaters the quantity is so small. Companies love to 'hide' the real nutrition information in their products by offering such small serving sizes and apparently, seems to fool people.

But let's say for the sake of argument that the measly 1/4 cup of eggbeaters DOES fill you up. Do you realized that you just used up 1/4 of your daily cholesterol intake in that tiny meal? Not to mention that now if you have ANYTHING else throughout the day that contains egg (note not eggs, simply, contains egg) you have now probably just jumped over your daily threshold just with eggs! But cholesterol is found in many many other foods.

Did you eat anything today made with butter? Butter is found in SO MANY foods it's hard to avoid it. But butter provides a double whammy. Not only does it contain cholesterol, it contains saturated fat, which, guess what, leads to high cholesterol. They add up quick! Trust me, I've looked into these things because I have heart disease. The little 1/4 cup is totally NOT worth it for those who need to watch their cholesterol intake.

Nice post Carole! Thanks for alerting us eggbeaters eaters that now we have to make sure that we don't accidentally grab one of the wrong cartons. I see lawsuits on the way.

  6. I totally agree with you Mark. You are right on the money with all that you say. Supposedly there are 8 servings in one of those little containers. I get a generous two. Of course I could get more if I have say, toast, and fruit also, but then there's just more to clean up too. And then, more to wash. And besides, I just put a little Tabasco sauce or Frank's Red Hot sauce on those eggbeaters and all is well. I certainly don't need more egg cholesterol in my diet, I'd rather have those buffalo wings!!

I read each and every comment, and though I don't always get a chance to respond, I enjoy reading (and pondering) what you have to say. Thanks for your 2 cents! :-)
