I truly can't believe this, but I got an email from American Girl a few minutes ago, which confirms what they were talking about on the American Girl Doll message board I like to frequent - that Samantha is being "archived" - which is a bit of a strange term, but the point of the matter is, you're not going to be able to purchase Samantha, Nellie or any of their things any more once they sell out what they have, except for the mini-dolls and book, I believe.
I have always wanted Samantha, but figured I could get her any time. I ordered her today. I'll put her away for my Christmas or birthday gift, but I'd regret it terribly if I missed out on her. I'd be heartbroken actually, if I missed out on her.
I'm sure this is some ploy on the part of American Girl (owned by Mattel) to somehow make even more money. They'll probably "re-release" her in 10 years as some $350 commemorative, limited-edition package or something. Who knows. Anyway, if you wanted her, you'd better get her now!
Here's a copy of the email I got:

Dear Samantha Fan,
We're writing with important news about an American Girl original, Samantha Parkington®. As one of her biggest fans, we wanted you to be among the first to know that soon, Samantha'™s complete collectionincluding Nellie® and her accessories will be moving into the American Girl Archives.
While Samantha has been one of American Girl™s most popular historical characters since her introduction in 1986, we felt the timing was right to preserve her place in American Girl™s history, making it possible to introduce new characters and time periods for our customers to enjoy.
Starting today, we're inviting American Girl fans to share their favorite Samantha memories (see below) as a way of commemorating Samantha and the impact she's had on girls for more than 22 years. Whether it's remembering your beloved Samantha doll or an important lesson learned from her books, we want to hear your story.
We hope you'll join us in celebrating Samantha! Watch for more information via our catalogues or at americangirl.com. In the meantime, don't miss the opportunity to purchase items from Samantha's collection before it's too late. Thank you again for your continued support.
Sincerely,
American Girl
P.S. Though Samantha will soon be moving into the American Girl Archives, her stories will live on! You'll continue to find Samantha books at americangirl.com, at American Girl stores, and at booksellers nationwide.

I read each and every comment, and though I don't always get a chance to respond, I enjoy reading (and pondering) what you have to say. Thanks for your 2 cents! :-)
