Because that's what I feel like talking about.
Canned Peas. Have you ever had them? They're gross. I admit that. Even the "best" canned peas (which are, in my opinion, Le Sueur Baby Peas) are still gross. Yet DH and I LOVE them. In fact, for dinner tonight I had one crescent roll, a glass of wine (ok, ok TWO glasses of wine) and about half a can of peas. (I wasn't that hungry because I had McDonald's for lunch, I KNOW I KNOW, bad bad bad!!!!)
The only reason we can figure that we like them so much is that they remind us of our childhood - those gross canned peas have become a comfort food for us, you know?
I also LOVE Campbell's crappy split pea soup with ham. Have you ever had that? Have you ever SEEN what that looks like when you open the can? Could it BE any less appetizing? I started liking split pea soup when we were married and broke living in Binghamton, NY when we were first married. The place I worked had a cafeteria and you could get a bowl of soup for $1.00. And all the oyster crackers you wanted. I used to buy a bowl of split pea soup for $1.00 and take like 5 packages of oyster crackers and that was lunch.
Is there something you like that is kinda gross, but you just like it because you ate it as a kid, or have fond memories of it, or it's a comfort food for you?
The end....but not really because I want to hear what you have to say!
P.S. I'll finish the story of our trip and what we did at our property next week - and yes Jude - we DID collect more pine cones and stuff - I'll have take a pic and show you how much DD collected... :-O

I also love Le Seur peas...we called them Liesurely peas because I misread the label once when I was young, and Liesurely peas they remained. :)
ReplyDeleteI always liked split pea soup because Grams used to make it all the time from ham bones...not sure if you've ever had her soup. Even home made yummy split pea soup looks really gross, but it's delicious.
Another gross thing I like is canned hash...which comes out in the shape of the can and you have to smoosh it around, and it's salty, and full of fat, and extremely unhealthy...and great with eggs. ;)
My Dad used to make disgusting concoctions, but some of them like eggs with ketchup, spam, and canned hash caught on with me. :)
Of course now I wish I could still have him cook some of those concoctions now that he's gone.
Uh oh...baby crying. Bye!
I likes 'em! I mix 'em with canned corn and mix it all in with my dirty rice. Yum!
ReplyDeleteI think that's probably the only way I like them, though.
Yeah . . . uh . . . maybe not so much.
Wow, remember how I said we were so similar that I wondered if we were twins separated at birth?!?
ReplyDeleteYour love for peas has dashed all that to.. well, to peas-es. HA!
I hate canned peas. Ick! But you are brave for eating them. I do like them raw from the garden (only a few at a time though). My kids will not eat peas in any form, and I don't make them. I do, however, forvce them to eat green beans. They've gotta eat something green!
I used to hate chickpeas as a kid. My mom put them in soups-- BLEEECH! Pasta fazool was the WORST and it was loaded with chick peas! Ewwwww ewwwww!
But now, I love chick peas. huh! I actually crave them sometimes. I like them with fresh spinach leaves, sliced red onions, crumbled feta cheese, and black olive, with spicy Caesar salad dressing. Mmmm mhy mouth is watering right now....
OMG! You crack me up! You are so write, canned peas are gross! I do occasionally use them in stew though.
ReplyDeleteLOL - I know exactly what you mean about canned peas - yuck.
ReplyDeleteThere is nothing better than canned peas, still a bit cool, coming right from a freshly drained can! Yummmmm
ReplyDeleteOur family has a serious thing for smoked oysters! When I was little, they were too expensive to buy, so Santa would bring them and put them in our stockings! Yes, I mean it. Christmas morning breakfast was always our smoked oysters, with egg nog. Yeesh. I still love 'em though! My favorite way to eat them in on Pilot Bread with cheese melted on them. Yummy!
ReplyDeleteThanks for bringing back great memories.......
Dang Carole I like peas canned or otherwise and when Bill made me pea salad I loved it even better...Oh No Gross...Heat the peas, a little butter, drain the juice, add chopped onions and a little mayonnaise have with Bill's famous mashed potatoes and BBQ ribs and they are delicious.
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to see what you do with the cones. You're sweet Carole Thank-You.
Canned peas? I would not, could not, in a box...
ReplyDeleteLOL...I think one of mine is ham and bean soup. My mom used to make it in the crock pot and it was heavenly. I even put...wait for it...ketchup in it. OMGoodness, don't tell anyone lol! :)
ReplyDeleteDh *loves* canned peas. I like them, I like peas in general. I think what got him though is when I ate onion bagels with peanut butter. Mmmmmmm...But alas, now I'm allergic to pb:(.
ReplyDeletei actually like canned peas and i don't know why, i will have to try the brand you recommended. i hated beans and rice as a kid because we had to eat them everyday that and cornflakes. i eat beans and rice now but not the cornflakes.. oh no not the cornflakes.
ReplyDeleteI like canned peas with a ton of onions, mayo and relish mixed in. AKA pea salad.
ReplyDeleteMy gross comfort food though......Sauerkraut, or as my kids call it..........Sewercrap.
I just can't eat green peas...at all, in any way. It is because of a throw-back from my childhood.

Canned peas? Hmmmm ... it's been years. Might try 'em again.
ReplyDeleteCanned Spam, now. Sliced up and fried to a moist crisp. So comfy, so bad for you! Yum ...
(I love your mascot, by the way!)
