Our Weekend in the Adirondacks Part 1

I'm feeling somewhat better today, thanks to all the well-wishers!

We had a very full weekend, so I'll do this in parts.

For many years we have traveled up to the Lake George area for Warrensburg NY's World's Largest Garage Sale.  It's usually the first weekend in October and it's a garage sale and flea market all in one.  It literally encompasses the entire town.  We don't usually buy much, but we really enjoy walking around all day in the cool fall weather, looking at the foliage and the mountians, and of course gawking over the amazing stuff (crap?) people have for sale! :-)

The past few years we have stayed at the Sundowner motel, one of many similar motels along the "main drag".  It's right on Lake George, which is nice, and it's also easy to walk into town from there.

Here's a shot of the section where we stayed:

See the back of my truck there on the right?  :-)

The room we had was two double beds and was one of the cheapest rooms because it wasn't close to the lake.  It was fairly inexpensive for what it was, however, it was in the section that has not been renovated yet (which we knew, so it wasn't a surprise or anything) and it literally probably hasn't been redone since the 1950s.  Pink tile in the bathroom and brown paneling and everything.  My Mother-in-law, who came up with a friend, stayed in the newer section across the parking lot and had a room with two Queen beds.  Their room was $20 more and their room was like a palace.  It was really big, and everything was new and nice.  Even the bathroom was huge with double sinks!  They definitely got a good value for their extra $20!

Here's a shot of the tiny beach, which is typical for a lot of the motels on the main drag,  It's a small beach, but it's quite nice for sitting and relaxing.

And, there's enough beach for playin' in the sand...

Here's a shot from the motel beach of Lake George itself.  It's so beautiful, isn't it?

We got into Lake George at around 7pm, brought our stuff up to our room, and then met up with my Mother-in-law and her friend and played Uno in their room for awhile.  Somehow DD won nearly every game.  She's a good Uno player, but I think they were going easy on her.  :-)

We then said our good-nights and made plans to all gather in our room the next morning at 8am to eat bagels and coffee and juice before heading up to Warrensburg.  We like to bring our own breakfast, this way we can get a quick start to the garage sale.  It's not easy to find good parking up there because it gets so crowded, so it's better to get there as early as you can.

We went back to our room, turned on the heater and got ready to go to sleep.  Along with the 50s decor we were enjoying, the bathroom door made an ear-splitting continuous squeak when you opened or closed it.  (No extra charge for that bonus room feature.)  Good thing none of us have a bladder problem or we'd all have been awake all night long.  (If you're incontinent and decide to stay at the Sundowner, let me just suggest you spend the extra $20 and get the nicer room, with a door that's been oiled within the last decade.)

So the next morning we were up bright and early, had our bagel breakfast with MIL and her girlfriend, and headed up with the truck for The World's Largest Garage Sale!

To be continued...

  1. Isn't it funny how sometimes $20 can get you so much but other times not? At least you know for next time, right?

I've never been to Lake George before-my aunt used to go all the time when I was little though. From your pictures, it looks really pretty. I can't wait to hear/see more.

  2. I'm looking forward to reading more. I did a post when we went Lake George, Fort Ti (we snuck in), and hiked up Pilot Knob hill. The area is SO beautiful. Did you knw there is a sunken ship in the lake?

  3. What a fun get away, that's what we should do more of instead of long tiring trips. Next vacation we will stay at home and make short excursions to the surrounding areas that we never seem to visit.

  4. What a gorgeous spot! We had a "staycation" this year, what with gas prices they way they are. I'm so surprised that $20 makes such a difference in accomodations! I'll remember that in the future... :)

  6. Can't wait to see more about the town-wide sale,... I used to travel to sell there. I set up my table in front of a friend's camper right across from Niagra Mohawk's bldg. That was many years ago. It was always fun.

  7. Mags: Yeah, I know - $20 doesn't usually make that much difference, but wow - it ended up being a difference of about 50 years!

Mrs. Mecomber: I have read your post about Pilot Knob and Fort Ti - we've been to the Fort, but not Pilot Knob. There are actually a large number of sunken ships and boats in Lake George and would you believe you can go scuba diving to explore some of them now?? You won't see any posts about ME doing that, btw! :-P If you're interested, here's a link to an article about all the different boats on the floor of Lake George: http://www.poststar.com/articles/2006/07/23/news/doc44c2deff4f686020059818.txt
    Hope you're feeling better, btw!

Jude: Yes, sometimes it's really nice to take short trips - it's fun to explore the area where you live! And cheaper too! :-)

Andrea: Yeah, a staycation can definitely be a lot of fun! We love doing day trips, and luckily live close enough to plenty of places that are fun to visit!

Rose Works: Oh the Garage Sale IS loads of fun! If you like that sort of thing...which I definitely do! :-) The browsing is just as fun as the buying!

Cedar: If you haven't been there in quite a few years, you'd probably be amazed to see how enormous it is. I remember when we first started going about 15 years ago, there were like a handful of people at the motels in Lake George - nowadays our motel had no vacancy and the village is hopping like it's summer. It was great fun, but you looked like you had a really enjoyable weekend as well and I look forward to hearing more about that too. Seemed like it was a lot less "commercial" than the Warrensburg extravaganza, heh.

I read each and every comment, and though I don't always get a chance to respond, I enjoy reading (and pondering) what you have to say. Thanks for your 2 cents! :-)
