What Two Things Won't YOU Eat?

Noooooooooooooooooo!

I am not a picky eater.  I like many kinds of foods and I LOVE to try new foods.  I've eaten snails, bear, deer, alligator, tofu, goat cheese, vegetables and fruits I'd never heard of before, all sorts of stuff, but there are two foods I really really hate and won't eat.

I HATE grapefruit.  Even if it's a little chunk mixed in with a fruit salad, oh I can taste that distinctive taste right away.  It truly makes me gag.

I also HATE water chestnuts.   They don't even seem like food.  They seem like something synthetic, I don't know, is anyone with me on this?  I pick each and every one out of Chinese food.  Oh I hate them!

But that's about it.  I mean, aside from cow eyeballs and weird things they make you eat on Fear Factor and Survivor.

Now, I was trying to think about the depth to which I hate these foods.  Here's my test.  If I was invited to a dinner party, given by someone I really care about, could I choke it down so they wouldn't feel bad?

Water chestnuts, yes.  Grapefruit, no.  On the grapefruit, I could choke down a few pieces, but I know I could not eat more than a third of a grapefruit.  The water chestnuts, I could, if I absolutely had to, choke down.

What about you?  What food could you not choke down even if it meant hurting someone's feelings?

The end, but not really, because I want to know what YOU have to say!

  1. My husband will not eat peas and meatloaf. He HATES it. So even though I like both, I don't use peas and have never made meatloaf. He said that his mom forced him to eat peas that have been 'cooked to death' so it's mushy. I guess his mom's meatloaf is also horrible. Come to think of it, she's not really a good cook. :)

  2. Raw carrots and celery will make me vomit if I chew them and try to swallow them, and I truly do not care for liver.
I'll miss your blog while I'm gone!

  3. I hate onions with a passion. I can't stand their crunchy texture, their smell (in my opinion, fried onions smell like sweat), and their taste (but I guess I could eat something that had onions in it if I couldn't know they were there).

I guess the second thing I wouldn't eat would be some kind of gelatin made out of lard (I'm not even sure what it is, but in my country there's a traditional dish prepared during Christmas with that gelatin and some disgusting-looking meat as the main ingredients).

  4. I love both grapefruit and water chestnuts.

However, I have a long list of foods I detest:
    1. Mayonnaise
    2. Pickles
    3. Olives
    4. Sushi (all of it)
    5. Bananas
    6. Bologna
    7. Meatloaf
    8. Lima beans
    9. English peas
    10. Squirrel (I live in Arkansas -- yes, I've eaten squirrel before)
    11. Guacamole
    12. That shredded coconut that's highly processed and shoved in a bag (just because fresh coconut is so much better)
    13. Applesauce (the texture is sickening)
    14. Anchovies

I could go on and on, but I think the point is made. The Hawg is picky.

I believe this is 'lutefisk' and lots of Scandinavian Lutherans here in MN eat it at the holidays. I'm not Scandinavian and I won't eat weird veggies in Jell-O with the Lutherans:).

Carole, I'm with you on the water chestnuts. That. Texture. Not a big sprouts fan either. I could probably do it for a loved one, but I won't do peanuts, cause that whole not breathing thing.

PS Oh I hope to get the kids to the ADK someday!!!!

  7. For me it used to be goat cheese and salmon-but in culinary school we used goat cheese a lot and I found that I really liked it! And one day the same thing happened with salmon=very weird.

Liver is one thing I can't choke down. I'm sure there are other things, but at the moment, I can't think of them.

  9. The food item that comes to mind right away is calamari. I won't have anything to do with it. I don't think my body needs squid (or octopus for that matter) in any shape or form.

  10. brussel sprouts... now what was that you said about cow's eyeballs? seems they might be about the same size and texture! haha.....

  11. Oh, I am with you on the water chestnuts...so bland, no flavor and they crunch! Not a crunch like stir-fry, but a crunch like something that shouldn't be in your mouth! Speaking of which...let me comment on mushrooms! They are slimy! All I can think of when I get one in my mouth is GRUBS! EWWWW, YUCK! I have to agree with lynne about the octopus; however, have eaten squid though I didn't know it at the time. Was a bit fishy, but OK until they told me what is was! Another EWWWWWW, YUCK!

  12. ok - aside from, like you said, Fear Factor stuff (because that's just a given) ... I can't eat peaches. Ugh. the fuzz is just gross.

And I can't eat broccoli. OMG, the smell of cooked broccoli is enough to make me swear off food all together.

  13. Anything with the word "feet" in it. Kale (because my mom tried to force me to eat it when I was young.) ;-)

  15. Ooh mushrooms...I can handle them in very very small amounts (cooked and uncooked, organic is better!) but I agree with dh's aunt's assessment: slimy little devils! LOL!!!

  16. Cottage cheese and porridge.

    I think it's the texture.

  17. cooked oatmeal is the absolute worse, and the fat from meat makes me gag

  18. I used to never eat sushi, sashimi, eggplant, liver, okra and bitter gourd. Now I love them! I've eaten everything--strange and familiar! I've tasted frogs, snails, snake, lizard, goat, rabbit, dog... ya, in my country, everything is food. I won't eat rat or anything insect. That's a little too creepy even for me. But now I eat very little meat and just stick to veggies and fish.

  19. On the water chestnut note - whenever I was dragged to either a Mongolian BBQ or Flat-Top Grille type restaurant with co-workers when I used to work in suburbia I would always put water chestnuts on my meat dish. I'm not sure why as they are flavorless and pointless. Get rid of them.

I read each and every comment, and though I don't always get a chance to respond, I enjoy reading (and pondering) what you have to say. Thanks for your 2 cents! :-)
