"The House of Weather Stations"
That would be my house. After this Christmas we now have FOUR weather stations. (Can anyone beat that?) We had an existing one in the kitchen, DD got one for her birthday last year, DH got one for Christmas for his bathroom vanity, and *I* got the coolest weather station of them all! Check THIS out!
We get a ton of promotional products, magazines, catalogs and junk in the mail ALL THE TIME, and I throw nearly all of it out, save for a few catalogs that I like to look through (like LL Bean, American Girl, Plow and Hearth, sometimes Cabelas, to name a few...). Around Christmas I like to browse the Gardener's Supply catalog - they seem to have a lot of interesting stuff that I haven't seen everywhere else. (I wouldn't even call myself a gardener, by the way. Anything that I succeed in coaxing out of the ground is more likely to be an Act of God than anything I can take credit for.) Anyway, that's where I spotted this "Weather Direct Talking Wireless Weather Station". (I have the WA-1240U model - the fake wood accents are nice, eh?)
This thing is amazing - it comes with a "gateway" that you plug into your router, as well as a sensor you place outside. They wirelessly send information to the weather station. The fun part is the "talking" part - you go online and can configure yourself what it will say when the alarm goes off (or you can just have a regular beep or whatever, but the talking is way more fun). You can even pick a man's or woman's voice. (I picked a man.) You can have it say a custom message. The first few times I picked typical things like, "Good morning Carole." But it was more fun to be a little silly. Now Mr. Weather Direct says, "Hey Carole Barrel, wakey wakey!". (I'll have to think of even funnier and more challenging things for him to try to say...I'm open to suggestions...)
It also has three other buttons that you can choose news feeds for (from choices on their website) and these are read by a man and a woman. Stuff like Top Headlines, Farmer's Almanac Advice of the Day, Sports Headlines, etc., so you can hear the top headlines before you even get out of bed at the touch of a button.
And, oh yeah, I guess most importantly - it displays the four day forecast with high and low temps, plus the current outside temp at your own location! A text forecast even scrolls along the bottom.
(It gets information over the internet twice a day - when I snapped this photo it just so happened to be getting updates - that's why it says "Update 6".)
It took a few steps to get it set up initially involving the computer and plugging it into the router, but miraculously it went without a glitch! I don't know anything about their other models, but I highly recommend the Weather Direct Talking Wireless Weather Station WA-1240U if you are a "weather nut" or "gadget freak" like me. (It is pretty pricey though, so don't say I didn't warn ya.)
And just in case you were wondering, it's 14 degrees outside right now. :-D
The end.
(This is NOT a paid post for Weather Direct btw, I just think this is really cool! Oh, and it's a Christmas present from my Dad - thanks a lot Dad!!!)
(OMG excuse the dust! How the heck did it get that dusty only since Christmas?!?)

Sounds so neat! We have two weather stations already, thanks to my pilot husband aaaand our house on a runway. LOL. We got ours from Oregon Scientific. They have outdoor sensors as well. I have not heard of the internet linked one, so may have to check it out! So cool!
Speaking of cool, our cold snap is making ME feel snappy. Ugh. Twenty five below yesterday am.
Happy New Year, Carole!
I need to remember this for next Christmas. My Dad would LOVE that! Thanks for sharing.
That sounds like fun as well as informative! Especially the funny greetings,... "Carole Barrel",..really! How about "Good Morning Carole, you are looking especially glamorous today!" ... Now that's what I need! It would get me started with a chuckle if I heard a voice say that to me!
Gardener's Supply is one of my favorite catalogs and I have been looking at the weather stations. I love weather and all kinds of stuff about weather. I really enjoyed reading your post and maybe I can convince Mountain Man we need one of these weather stations. It sure looks cool.
It's 12 below here at the moment :)
You said it only updates twice a day...what if there's a severe weather alert? Does it notify you?
Glitzen - Happy New Year to you too! 25 BELOW? I think if I were you I wouldn't WANT weather stations - I don't think I'd want to know it was that cold out! :-P
Cynthia - yeah, it is a pretty unique weather station - definitely could be a good "Dad" gift!
Cedar - GREAT idea of what to make the "weather man voice" say (Carole you look glamorous today...)! Love it!
Mountain Woman - I find weather really fascinating, so I am enjoying this. I find I'm also really enjoying the addition of the buttons that read the top headlines too. Plus if I can make the "weather voice" tell me I look glamorous, well, how can you beat that? :-D
Krissy - I have not fully explored some of the other options available with this weather station - they offer packages that come at an additional cost that provide other info like weather for up to 4 other locations and severe weather alerts - maybe if you sign up for weather alerts it updates more often - I don't know, good question!
