My New and Improved Christmas Village, Not So New and Improved Gingerbread House

For Christmas DH got me a couple of new pieces for my Dept. 56 New England Village, and I finally had a chance to make a new layout with the add'l pieces, and although you can buy "roads", I made my own for now.  It's a little hokey, but I was pretty happy with how it turned out.  (You can see how it looked before if you scroll down in this post.)  Here's a view of the new layout:

Here's a closeup view of my "Hokey Street":

And usually every year I buy one of those pre-baked gingerbread house kits and DD and I put it together.  I forget which brand I normally get (I would know the box if I saw it), but this year I was at BJ's Wholesale Club and they had a kit that looked really good - it even came with it's own tray with "wells" for the walls of the house so you don't have to brace the whole thing with soup cans, and it came with a ton of good candy.  Too bad the icing it came with was so dry and thick it took superhuman strength to squeeze it through the bag!  In fact, the kit came with a pastry bag and icing tip but it was impossible to use it - I actually nearly had a blow out in the bag from trying to squeeze it - good grief, I didn't expect to have to put on my goggles and safety equipment for a gingerbread house!  Ended up taking all the icing out and putting it in a ziploc, and then of course I had to cut a giant hole in the tip of the bag just to be able to get the icing out without having to call up the World's Strongest Man (have you ever watched that competition show on tv? I love that show.).  So I had to try to ice and decorate it with big, huge dry strings of icing.  Not exactly one of my fondest Christmas memories from this year.  However, despite the crappiness of this stupid kit, we persevered and here it is...  (Once the candy started going on, that helped distract from the culinary-school-dropout icing job.)

(Incidentally, I realize I could have attempted to thin the icing with a little milk or water, but I was really worried that it might not incorporate properly and I might ruin the icing completely.)  I think we were supposed to write our own last name over the door, but in the picture on the box it said, "Kringle" and that's what DD wanted to write, so just in case you were rubbing your hands with glee, ready to try to hunt down "Carole Kringle" and toilet paper my house, I'll save you the time, that's not our last name.

Only two more days of eating everything in sight until I join Weight Watchers!

The end.

  1. Drat. Guess I'll have to use the toilet paper now...

  2. I love your 'hokey' street! It's not hokey at all. And cute house, lol.

That would be so Christmas-lly fantastic if your name was Carole Kringle though. It sounds like a character from Elf or from one of those Rankin-Bass stop motion animation movies.

  3. Not sure if you are serious about Weight Watchers,..but I know have set upon a major change in eating habits since finally cleaning up the last of the candy and goodies. I was feeling like the Goodyear Blimp! After only a couple of days I am feeling my old self, but hey,... I think I'll continue and see what happens!

  4. I love your street and gingerbread house. I've never made a gingerbread house. I've always wanted to, but never have.
Is there a special significance to starting WW on the 9th?

  8. Your street is great!

If you see the box of the easy to do gingerbread let me know the brand name! I am going to be crazy one year and make one with my monkey girl. Although, the one you did make, makes it looks easy.

  9. I LOVE the worlds strongest man competition!! I can't watch it though b/c it's usually on in marathons, and well, I'd sit and watch it all day!

  10. I love your street! I actually scrolled down and saw it before I read the post, and I thought, "That's so cute, what a neat idea." Just plow away the fake snow and voila! street.

Or, on closer inspection, did you cut up a table cloth? Anyway, it looks really good!

You guys did a great job on the gingerbread house too. I've never tried one but can't figure out how you managed to actually make it and not eat it. I thought you said you needed Weight Watchers. Just kidding, good job!

  11. Your village looks great and so does your Gingerbread house. I have a village too but never know what to use for snow. What did you use? I want to eat some of the gingerbread house up. I would never attempt to make one of those. It looks too hard for me!

  12. Rebecca - I've never tasted part of a real, homemade gingerbread house, but the kind like this you buy at the store in a kit doesn't taste that great - I think for sturdiness the gingerbread is very dry and hard. It's not even the slightest bit tempting to me to eat...which is a good thing!

Empty Envelope - Yeah, I do like the name "Carole Kringle" - it sounds so festive and happy! Maybe that will be my fake name that I use when I become really famous so when I check into hotels they won't know it's me... :-D

Cedar - Yep, I'm serious about Weight Watchers, I'm joining tomorrow. I know it will be tough, but I'm ready.

Krissy - I'm starting tomorrow because in the past Thursdays have been my day of choice for "weigh in", so I figured I'll start off on a Thursday.

Nessa - Thank you! Yeah, I caught the cat trying at it once, but it was Basil the old crotchety one, so once I removed the chair she was using to get to it, it was safe! :-)

4 Lettre Words - Thank you! I used to have my village on the mantle too, but now I have the happy problem that it doesn't fit anymore, so I've graduated to a table.

Kreations - I don't remember the brand of gingerbread house I usually make, but around here it's in all the supermarkets, just keep your eye out next year.

Mags - I nearly busted out laughing when I saw you visited - I knew you were a nice person, but you are REALLY SUPER SWEET to compliment my gingerbread house (that looks like it's from the slums) - for those of you who don't know Mags, she's a super talented gourmet chef - you should SEE the stuff SHE makes! Seriously - go here and scroll down: http://msmaggiemoo.blogspot.com/ or click on her Etsy shop on her site in the right sidebar.

Cindy - No I didn't have to cut up the tablecloth luckily, I made my "hokey" street, then sprinkled the fake snow all along the edges to well, cover the edges! And voila. :-) And as I mentioned, the gingerbread house from the store kit doesn't taste that good, so, no temptation there.

Karen - They sell fake snow to use with the village - I believe it's actually finely cut up plastic. It's not very expensive and it makes a nice effect. Plus you can sweep most of it up when you're done and reuse it. And, the gingerbread house from the kit I USUALLY get is actually really easy - all you really do is glue it together with the icing and decorate, I'm no pastry chef but it was even easy for me - really!

  13. Hey, that Gingerbread house looks pretty awesome! It's really beautiful! Unfortunately, like Cedar, I'm not allowed to eat that stuff anymore. Dang. I just love the Dept 56 villages too.

I read each and every comment, and though I don't always get a chance to respond, I enjoy reading (and pondering) what you have to say. Thanks for your 2 cents! :-)
