Our New Year's Eve Dinner (with pictures!)
Well, as I mentioned in a previous post, we had a seafood dinner for New Year's Eve. Here are the victims:
Our cat Basil had to investigate...
Q-ee however, decided he wanted to keep a safe distance....
When we gathered up the lobsters we found this - I am presuming it's lobster pee?? Now that's something I've never seen before! Weird, huh?
We have a few special things for eating lobster - here are the cutesy plates (FYI, we do not need, nor do we follow their instructions for "How to Eat a Lobster).
These butter warmer things are really handy - the tea light underneath keeps the butter nice and hot.
And here is a shot mid-way through our dinner...
I guess Basil kitty could smell something good in the bags that the lobster and crab came in!
Eating lobsters and crab legs is a messy business. A great thing about eating at home is you don't have to worry about getting butter or "lobster water" on your fancy blouse or silk ties - and you can get up lots of times if you want to wash your hands. I will rarely order a whole lobster at a restaurant because it's just so hard to eat without making a mess. Besides the dripping butter, there's always water that comes out of the shells and there's usually a bit of white "goo" also. Also, at home I like to cut open the body and wash out the "tamale" - at the restaurant they leave it, and I don't care to eat it. (I forget exactly what that stuff is anyway - sometimes it's green and sometimes it red - don't tell me, I don't want to know, I kinda just like to block that part out.)
Here's the "aftermath"...
I question why anyone would want to read this little "photo essay" of our New Year's Eve dinner, but hey, thanks for humoring me! :-D
The end.

Wow, what a spread!!! I think I've eaten lobster off the shell once in my life. I look at it this way, if it takes longer than one second to get food in my mouth, it's too much work.
I would ignore all the little "deposit" myself. Best not to think about it.
Happy new year!
I'm guessing your Lobsters got scared and left the pee when they saw your cat getting closer! LOL!
Great pics!
Dr. Rus
Carole, I knew I should have come to your house for supper last night! Re: the pee,... well, I guess if I thought I was going to be dropped head first into boiling water, I might do that myself! It's been too long since I have had lobster, somehow a "lobstah roll" at a local eatery just isn't the same. Your New Year's Eve meal looks like heaven to me!
Hi, I read it! LOL Happy new year! :o) Love lobstah!
Looks like a great meal. We had oysters, crab, scallops, & shrimp. And lots of butter! You have to have lots of guts to drop those lobsters in. Never done that.
BTW, we have a gray cat that looks like yours.

Wow, what a festive holiday dinner. I loved your plates and your butter sauce pots too. The whole table setting was so much fun.
I've never seen lobster pee before either.
Happy New Year to you!
Looks like a great time.
This is a perfect post for this week's Family FotoFun Friday found here.
Muahaha, that third picture just cracks me up!
I liked reading this post. The only time I had real lobster was when I ordered a seafood plate at a Chinese restaurant in New York City! Never had it fresh off the critter, though, lol. Maybe I'll give it a shot someday. I'll have to return here for tips. ;)
P.S. $2.99 was a GREAT deal for lobster! I'm going to have to look out for that, next year, at our local Hannaford.
When I worked in a seafood restaurant ages ago, we would take the lobsters out and race them on the carpet when the place was empty, LOL. Neat weather station!
Kathy - I know, it IS a lot of work to get your food, but, it's worth it once in a while! And the butter, oh the butter!
Interesting little known fact is that the Pilgrims ate a lot of lobster because they were so plentiful - so much so that they were sick of it because they had it so often!
Dr. Rus & Cedar - LOL! I'll be you're right - the lobster either peed in fright of the cat or the big pot of boiling water!
Babette - Heh, thanks for reading - and Happy New Year to you too!
Tonka Boy - Wow, your dinner sounds even better than ours! And, I let DH do the "dropping into the boiling water" - I also wouldn't have the heart to do it. And your Sophie is so precious - she does look just like our Basil!
Mountain Woman - thanks for the compliments - and now you've seen lobster pee too! :-P
Diana - thanks, I'll check out the Family Foto Fun Friday.
Janett - heh heh, you must have cats too?
Rebecca - Yeah $4.99/lb WAS a great price. Each year we scour the flyers to see who's got the best price, seems like they often go on sale for a good price at New Year's.
Also, FYI, for those that are too squeamish like me, most supermarkets will steam them for you for free - you don't have to face the trauma of putting them into boiling water yourself if you don't want to. :-)
City Mouse - lobster races, huh? I've heard a lot of things about what goes on at a restaurant, but that's a new one! Some of those critters can be pretty mad...
I love lobsters. But it is hard to eat, especially for a formal dinner. You don't want your silk ties dipping into the dish, right?
