We Decided on a Vacation Spot

So we went to my father's for dinner and had a "family meeting" to decide where to go on vacation last night.

(Incidentally, this is the man who never cooked a thing other than breakfast his whole life.  After my Mom died he had to learn from scratch how to cook.  And now he's gotten so good, he's making us dinner!  Smart man that he is, he has discovered Allrecipes.com and made this last night for us: Slow Cooker Chicken Continental - it was SO GOOD!!!  He used "Buddig Beef" though, instead of the jarred dry beef, and he made it with rice.  I can't believe now I'm getting recipes from my father!)

Anyway, it was rather difficult to come to a decision for two reasons. Number one: we had great choices - how to choose from all great ideas?  Number two: it was one of those instances where we all are very nice to one another and no one wanted to say "well I want to do THIS", you know what I mean?  It ended up coming down to my father using a wooden spoon and pot as a gavel, and then we started using the wooden spoon to pass around as the indicator of whose turn it was to talk, but we finally decided on Chincoteague, VA.  My Dad is going to call today to see if the rental house is still available for the times we chose.  If it turns out it's not available and we have to choose another, all I can say is, God help us.

(I was remembering an incident from last year when we were coming back from vacation and we were behind a car with one of the  "X-cargo" type carriers on top.  And yup - you guessed it - it came FLYING OFF going down the highway right toward us.  Luckily DH was able to steer clear of it but now I'm scared to ever follow anyone with one of those.  I don't know how those things attach to a car, but it ought to be with ball lock pins or something easy and secure, rather than the band-aids and chewing gum or whatever that person in front of us had used!!!  Totally dangerous!!!)

Also, our fantasy Nascar draft was last night.  I was actually pretty bummed with my roster, although I did get my favorite driver (Dale Earnhart Jr.).  For any Nascar fans out there, don't forget, the Bud Shootout is tonight (8pm EST) and tomorrow is cup series qualifying for the Daytona.  Anyway, here's my fantasy roster for this year:

Dale Earnhardt Jr.
Ryan Newman
Bobby Labonte
Joey Logano
Robby Gordon
Tony Raines

Well, there are a couple of drivers on there that could be "sleepers", so maybe my team will be better than I think.  The first year we played the fantasy league I actually won and my Dad bought a plastic Tiara for me as the prize.  So of course the next year I decided I should pass on the Tiara to the new winner (who was my BIL).  So now that is the coveted prize for the champion of our fantasy league.  The last winner of the Tiara was DH, so he'll have to go dust it off.

I still can't wait for the Iditarod though!

Happy Weekend everyone!

The end.

  4. The Chicken Continental recipe looks delicious! I just looked at it on Allrecipes.com, and I might just try to make it for Sunday dinner tomorrow. :)
Sounds like you'll have a wonderful family vacation. I can't wait to see photos. :)

  5. It's quite possible that the Busch brothers are the least liked NASCAR drivers of all time.

  6. Not wild about my team either. Curious to see if anybody's happy.

Ball lock pins, huh? I'd design a better roof carrier, if I still did engineering design, but I don't. Too late.

Reid Tool is excellent though, if anyone cares to know.

  9. I never really knew there way a fantasy league for Nascar.. I watched some of the Qualifying today. My fav is #24 Gordon..

Iditarod is the coolest event ever to follow along. My Wife (teacher) gets the kids involved and goes over musher info and the kids group up and pick a winner.

  10. I'm a Junior Fan too!
Were you as upset with the shootout as I was? It just did not seem like a race to me - Hopefully it will be better next weekend. The cars just seemed to be all over the place - I felt for the drivers.

  12. Storybeader - yes, we are so blessed - not only are we "close in feelings" (good way to put that!) but yes, we all live within about 20 min of each other, so we get to see each other pretty often, and be able to be more involved in each other's lives than if we lived hours apart.

Kristine & AK Mom - Don't worry, I will be SURE to take lots of pics!

Cedar - Yes, as much as I like winter, a vacation by the ocean in Virginia is definitely a happy thought in February! :-)

Kevin - Yeah, I wonder what kind of souvenir sales the Busch brothers have, I can't imagine their stuff flies off the shelves...heh...

JHKMBA - Yeah, well, we'll see how happy we are about our teams after qualifying on Thurs...although DH is not surprisingly quite happy already (for those who don't know, DH has Mark Martin who is on the outside pole for the Daytona 500).

Glitzen - I read Misty (of Chincoteague) as a kid and I LOVED that book (who didn't??) but I have never read any of her other books - I am definitely going to request some from the library - any recommendations?

Kerry - thanks! I have found out from my Dad that we DID get the week we wanted - yay! - so no worries, thanks!

Tazdog - www.nascar.com has a few different fantasy leagues - we always play the free one, it's pretty fun! My DD first introduced us to the Iditarod because she learned about it from HER teacher - that's awesome that your wife is sharing it with her students too. I love love LOVED last year how some of them carried a device that broadcasted their location via the GPS!

Nancy - I think the Bud Shootout is often crazy like that. It's not a points race, so really the only thing to race for is the win, so everybody kinda goes for broke. I think we'll kinda see that for Daytona too because there are some drivers in it with nothing to lose. Go Junior! ;-)

Ivanhoe - Oh I love my crockpot too! Jimmie Johnson is lookin' good this year, good luck! :-D

Thanks everyone for your comments, I enjoy reading each and every one!

I read each and every comment, and though I don't always get a chance to respond, I enjoy reading (and pondering) what you have to say. Thanks for your 2 cents! :-)
