I'm Always Thinking Ahead...

I'm always thinking ahead to what I might do once DD is older.  I guess I've always assumed I would go back to work, but after being out of the workforce for so many years that's going to be a little tricky.  The last time I worked was actually just a few years ago.  DH had been laid off for the SECOND time from my least favorite company in the entire world, the "layoff machine" also known as IBM, and I decided to go back to work while he looked for a new job.  I went to an employment agency and due to my secretarial skills which luckily weren't too rusty, I got a job working the front desk at a granite company.  It was interesting, but certainly not a career.

I've done a lot of thinking since then about what I might do one day career-wise.  The idea of getting a new degree online was interesting to me, so I started searching around online and came across a multitude of different courses that are available, such as MS Instruction at the School of Education at Saint Xavier University.  (It's accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), so it's not some fly-by-night sort of thing.)  I think it's pretty important for an online school to be accredited - I mean, you don't want to do all that hard work only to find out your diploma isn't worth the paper it's printed on.

One of the online degrees they offer is a Master of Arts in Curriculum and Instruction.  I think in this day and age being able to get a degree online is a GREAT way for stay at home moms like me, OR those currently in the workforce, to study a new career, or get an advanced degree.  According to their website you can fit your class schedules around your own busy life and commitments.  I could get my degree while my daughter is at school!  I think that's pretty awesome.

I'm not sure ultimately what I will do, but I will keep opportunities like that in the back of my mind.

In the meantime, I will keep entering the Publisher's Clearinghouse Sweepstakes - just in case.  Then I'll never have to worry about working. :-)

  2. Ya never know, a woman here won a million in PCH sweepstakes,.. But for me I think the job is the best idea. Online is a great idea. My daughter is also doing that through the U. of Maine. Go for it!

  3. I'm waiting for the PCH sweepstakes to make me a millionaire as well, Carole. :)
However, the online instruction sounds like a great idea. Good Luck!! :)

  4. I wrote a whole post about this topic the other day but I haven't decided if I'll publish it or not.

I can't decide what I'll do when I go back either. It's my 'Mid-Mom Crisis'. I have a degree and I've maintained my skill set but with the economy such as it is, there's no work in my field. I am also considering going back to school for a Master's Degree. If I do, it will probably be a Master's of Public Administration. I think I might need a new degree to make me 'relevant' in the working world again after a decade away from full-time employment.

  5. If I could pick any career, and IF (a big if) I were good in science, I would become a pharmacist. Those people are in such demand.

  6. I actually went back to work when my youngest was a year and then ended up hurt and leaving when he was almost 5. Then I started my shop last summer. I want to go to school and get a history degree so I can do something history related. But it seems a little...indulgent right now!

I read each and every comment, and though I don't always get a chance to respond, I enjoy reading (and pondering) what you have to say. Thanks for your 2 cents! :-)
