I Can't Escape From the Friendship Bread

That, my friends, is a bag of Friendship Bread starter.  Have you ever been given one of these?  My cousin T gave me some in mid May that I made into some delicious bread.  With this particular recipe, you leave the bag out on the counter for 10 days.  Most days you are to "mush the bag".  On day 6 I believe, you add some milk, sugar and flour.  There is yeast in the starter so over the 10 days it grows and ferments and you have to start letting the air out of the bag.  The air it makes smells like fermenting beer, which to me, smells really good.  Then on day 10 you add more ingredients, divide it into more "starters", then make a batch for yourself which makes two loaves.  The bread is really good and for some reason, I really enjoy the process. I wouldn't mind keeping one going all the time if not for the fact that it multiplies and you have to keep making a million loaves of bread.

The problem with Friendship Bread is getting people to take the new starters. I ended up getting myself into a situation of being left with a bunch of starters that I felt obligated to continue with.  It's not that I don't have friends, it's that I apparently don't have a lot of friends that like to bake.  Anyway, after what seemed like 500 loaves of bread and three starters in my freezer later, I finally put an end to the vicious cycle of friendship bread.

Only to be given one from my daughter's friend's Mom two days ago.  She however, has the right idea.  Don't ask people to take starter - just give it out.  I'm not sure what I'm going to do now that I'm on the Friendship Bread Train again, but in 8 more days my neighbors might be finding a little gift in their mailboxes...

The end.

  1. I used to think there was something distasteful about this bread (having never tasted it) til someone at work brought in a loaf, and it was really wonderful. If I lived near you, I would take a bag!

Too bad batches can't be delivered thru email. You'd be able to really spread the friendship!

  3. Oh, I remember Friendship Bread! I haven't had it in years, but I remember a flurry of receiving/sending starters and making the bread around the early 90s. Somewhere I have the recipe for the actual starter.

I loved it. I used to make it with chocolate chips. And I love the fermenting smell too.

I think I'll dig out that recipe. Thanks for posting this!

  4. As with JD, this circulated around the girls in my church in the early 90s (when my eldest was a baby-- WOW that was so long ago!). I think I FINALLY got rid of the stuff by the late 90s. WHEW!

  5. omg, this brings back some not so good memories. I had Friendship bread FORCED on me by a coworker. I tossed it. Then she kept asking me how it was going and to bring in some bread for her. It was an ugly situation. Friendship bread, shudder.
Now if it had been given to me by a FRIEND, I am sure I would have felt differently about it, lol.

  6. Last time I was given some I kept the starters that I separated in the freezer. worked fine. I didn't try to give any away, as everyone I knew was up to the rafters with it to begin with. Love the bread, but it is very fattening! Did you notice all the oil, sugar, etc. in it? yowie! And of course I added the chocolate chips too,... I think it's the root of the 20 lbs i gained this past winter!

  8. I used to get that fairly often til I mentioned that it makes me want to strangle someone after the first few rounds. Somehow people just didn't seem to want to give it to me anymore after that lol. Go figure huh?

  9. OH NO. Not friendship bread!

Ack! The weight on my shoulders, just hanging over me. The indecision about what to do when I forget all about it for four days and it explodes on the countertop. Do I pretend it was good? Try to scrape it up and bake it? Admit what I did?

    Argggghhhh!

  10. Bonnie - Here's a website that has the recipe for the starter. I'm not usually too good at working with yeast, but if you are, you can give it a shot: http://www.momswhothink.com/bread-recipes/amish-friendship-bread.html

Annofthejunkdrawerblogfamily - Oh how I WISH I could send the starter through email!! :-P

JD - I was thinking of adding choc chips this time, so I think now I will - good thought!

Rebecca - I hope I'm not stuck with this for a decade!!!! :-D

Kerry - I know, the Friendship Bread starter comes with the burden of responsibility and potentially guilt! I guess that's why it's so hard to get someone to take it! :-)

Cedar - Yes, being very calorie conscious lately I did notice it's pretty fattening, however I substituted applesauce for the oil which helped. Thanks for another vote for choc chips! :-)

Cynthia - LOL!!! Yes it totally is the food version of the chain letter, and just as dreaded I think!

Nessa - I think I need to try your tactic for the future! :-P

Wendy - Yes again, the starter comes with the burden of responsibility and guilt if it doesn't turn out. It's a trap I tell you! :-D

  11. Now isn't that fun?
The only thing Friendship about bread to me, is when a friend drop by my work place and present me the buns/cakes she bought from her shopping spree. ha.. I have no experience of getting that here before. Not many of my friends bake either, unless they're extremely free though. ^^

  12. Hi there. . . you have no clue who I am, but I have the starter too here in New York. . . it's hard to get friends to take a starter but if you make them bread. . . . It's easy to adjust your recipe and still keep one starter for yourself and you'll still keep the "friendship" going.

I read each and every comment, and though I don't always get a chance to respond, I enjoy reading (and pondering) what you have to say. Thanks for your 2 cents! :-)
