It was overcast and chilly on Saturday, but we went on our annual apple picking trip. Where I live in the Hudson Valley, NY there are TONS and TONS of places to go apple picking. What we consider a "good" place to go apple picking is a place that has: lots of varieites of apples, a hayride, animals to feed/look at, fresh cider doughnuts, friendly people and reasonable prices. The place we've been going the last few years fits the bill just fine. Plus, they have a FREE corn maze, which is a great bonus because around here it's like $7-8 per person to go in a corn maze - I just can't see paying $20+ for the three of us to walk through a corn field, ya know? The corn maze at the apple orchard is admittedly smaller than the places that charge money, but it's really fun and is fine for us. This year seemed to be a very good year for apples (but not a great year for pictures - I have some nicer pictures from this same place in my post from last year when it was beautiful and sunny, if you want to see more pics including the hayride and corn maze you can see them here.)
It's easy to pick waaaay too many apples. We did ok - I think we picked only a little too many. :-) I needed like a walk in bath or something just to wash them all. I also couldn't get them all in the fridge, so I put some down in the basement to keep them cool. The cooler you keep the apples, the longer they last. The ones in the bin in my fridge will seriously be fine for a couple of months at least. We picked mostly Golden Delicious, MacIntosh and Red Delicious, but they had lots of other varieties.
Next month we'll be going to our favorite local pumpkin patch to pick our pumpkins. Do you go apple picking or pumpkin picking? Are there different things to "pick" in your area?
The end.
Ok, you MUST pick up some carmel dip for those apples. I've seen it in the grocery store but never thought twice about it. My son asked me to get some and I thought, sure, why not.
ReplyDeleteWE CANNOT BUY IT AGAIN because it is so good. Get some - just this once - and dip apple wedges in it.
I've always wanted to go apple picking but never have!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing. Now I have to see where to go for that in the Chicago-land area!
What gorgeous apples!! We don't have anywhere around here to go apple picking, but I sure wish we did. Picking a pumpkin out of a pumpkin patch would be fun too. :)
ReplyDeleteWow! I have never in my life picked an apple. That would be an incredible experience. I am an apple FIEND. Love anything with apples. Your pictures are simply beautiful.
ReplyDeleteSigh. Apple picking. Heaven. :)
