Obituary: Basil Kittycat

(I have been too "verklempt" up until now to even post about this, but I'm going to push through because I want to honor my little friend.)

Basil
May 1994-November 25, 2009

Basil (aka "Basilcat", "The Basilometer", "Sweet Sweet Basil" and "Bey Bey") died on Wednesday, Novermber 25th, 2009 at age 15 1/2 after the last of her 9 lives expired of old age.  Her family had time for goodbyes, pets and kisses before she went over the "Rainbow Bridge".  Basil enjoyed some celebrity during her life, appearing in many blog posts, but she is probably best known for making headlines in "Giant Cat Wipes Out Ogunquit, Maine" and most recently she appeared in one of my most popular "Wordless Wednesday" posts ever: "Apparently Any Lap Will Do".  She is survived by her human family, as well as her good friend Tex dog and her enemy, Q-ee cat.  In lieu of flowers, the family would just like you to know what a good and faithful friend she was, through thick and thin, for richer or poorer, she loved us just the same.  We will miss you terribly, sweet Basil.

The *sob* End.

Nov 25 is the anniversary date when we lost our beloved Calvin. I know it's hard.

    Hugs,

  5. What a sweet obituary. So sorry to hear of your loss. And I know how you feel - we had a cat for 18 years that finally wore out all her lives a few years ago. We still miss her and talk about it. :)

  6. Oh no!!!!!!!! I would have given you all an extra big hug last night if I had known! She's always hiding when we come, so I didn't know she wasn't there. Oh, I'm so very sorry. I'll give extra big hugs when I see you next time. I'll say a prayer for her and for you, and for her friends Qee and Tex who I know are missing her too.
Shedding a tear for you too...
    Love you.

  8. I'm so awfully sorry. :( It's pretty rough when you lose a very dear pet, and Basil seemed so sweet and reliable. We had a close call with our little beagle....

((hugs)) to you and your daughter.

15 1/2 is very commendable! It is a wonderful thing for a kitty to spend his last days surrounded by a loving family.

  10. Oh, I'm sorry about the loss of your friend. I'm sure you miss Basil terribly. Know that she will be waiting for you at the Bridge and that someday you will be reunited. Until then, may her memories keep you and your lap warm.

  11. Oh Carole, my deepest sympathies to you and your family. We at Raging Bear Ranch now too well this pain you are going through. I'll leave you with this quote:
Suzanne Clothier is quoted as saying -
“There is a cycle of love and death that shapes the lives of those who choose to travel in the company of animals. It is a cycle unlike any other. To those who have never lived through its turnings and walked its rocky path, our willingness to give our hearts with full knowledge that they will be broken seems incomprehensible. Only we know how small a price we pay for what we receive; our grief, no matter how powerful it may be, is an insufficient measure of the joy we have been given.”

  18. Poor Basil and poor you Carole and family. I'm so glad Basil had a loving family and you all shared so much. I so dread thinking about a final goodbye with my Shadow. Looks like you had a great Thanksgiving and your Christmas tree looks so pretty.

  19. I am so sorry for all of you :( Our furry family members are terribly important to us and when we've lost them in the past, it's been terribly hard.

  20. Oh how sad! And such a gorgeous cat! It is so hard with cats as they live so long that you have to think hard to remember a time when they weren't there. (We refer to that time fondly as the days when we could sleep in late on the weekends).

I read each and every comment, and though I don't always get a chance to respond, I enjoy reading (and pondering) what you have to say. Thanks for your 2 cents! :-)
