Irons: Not Just For Clothes Anymore! Melty Beads and Krumkake, Anyone?

I use mine to make my daughter's melty bead creations!  I had a lot of work ahead of me this time.

Last year DD had made so many of these things she brought them to my husband's side of the family Christmas celebration and handed out raffle tickets and raffled them off.  Which was a great idea 'cause I didn't know what I was going to do with all of those things! :-)  (Thank you to our family members for being such gracious recipients and playing along! :-)

Speaking of Christmas, I have started thinking about holiday preparations and I'm starting to get a little stressed about it.  I really don't want to feel stressed though - it ruins the holidays for me.  If I can get myself organized, that will make me feel much better.  One thing I am planning on doing this year is making "krumkakes", hopefully for a dessert at Thanksgiving (I can make them ahead and freeze them as long as they're unfilled).  I have an electric krumkake iron  to make them.  They're kind of like pizzelles but you form them into a cone shape quickly right off the hot iron before they cool.  I usually fill mine with whipped cream.  Here's a pic to give you an idea in case you're not familiar with them:

So I bought the ingredients yesterday at the grocery store and I have broken my personal world record for most expensive spice I have ever bought.  I had to buy Cardamom.  I bought the regular McCormick size spice jar.  Can you guess how much it cost?  Would you believe $14.29?!?  For this??

All I gotta say is Cardamom better taste reeeeeeeeeeeally good!

I am thinking of making the krumkakes tomorrow.  I don't make them often so I'm not the best at making them, but I promise if do make them I will report back whether it's a success or a FAIL, and how many 3rd degree burns I get from touching the hot krumkakes.

Can anyone beat my $14.29 for a spice?

The end.

  1. I have been thinking about getting a pizelle iron lately. I enjoy making different deserts and I think this would be fun. You just gave me a good nudge in that direction.

  2. I haven't spent that much on any spice in ages. The only one I can think of that might cost that much is Saffron. I have noticed that spices are a lot more expensive these days.

  3. You've got me beat, I think the most I've paid for a spice is about $8. I like what your creating, they look delicious!

  4. I remember those bead things! The biggest challenge was walking upstairs to the iron and keeping them intact. And that's a lot of money for a spice. I've never bought that one.

  5. Wow, does the spice have gold flecks? My goodness that is a rather big ticket for such a small item. Wonder if you could substitute another spice for it?

Those melty things are so cool!

I read each and every comment, and though I don't always get a chance to respond, I enjoy reading (and pondering) what you have to say. Thanks for your 2 cents! :-)
