More "Thoughts Too Short for a Whole Blog Post"

Attention: If you're a blogger and you want a large audience, may I suggest that you don't use a cuss word in the title of your blog?

Now and then I drink soda from a can without washing the top off.  If a rat walked on it, so be it.

I really really like owls. I hardly have anything "owley" though.

If our DD catches us "name calling" (like calling another driver an "idiot", calling someone on tv a "stupid doofus") she says, "If you call someone a name, then YOU are the same name YOU are calling them."  We don't let her call people names, so geez, I guess we can't be doing that either, huh?

Have you ever looked at your Entrecard price and thought, "Wow, I'm cheap!"

I've been listening to Glenn Beck on the radio lately.  I really like him, but he scares me.  I had to ask my Dad (who was a CPA), "Is everything going to collapse tomorrow and we're all going to be eating potatoes and wearing flour sacks, or what??"

Recipe for crockpot leg of lamb with prunes = no.

Thursday Weigh In and My Thoughts on Posting Frequency

First of all, I'm not going to bother to try to create any suspense today, I'm just gonna blurt it out - I had a 3lb. loss when I got on the scale - WOO HOO!  I've lost 13lbs. so far, and this is a great place to be because that's enough to make my jeans feel really loose, so at least for having to control what I'm eating, I'm now finally enjoying the pay off of my hard work.  No more "muffin top" is nice, ya know? :-P  I do have a bit of a tough weekend ahead though - the awesome "fish fry" at one of our local firehouses starts this Friday and it is NOT to be missed.  Also DH requested corned beef and cabbage which I'm making over the weekend and well, THAT can't be good for a diet, can it?  Haven't even looked at the package yet to assess the damage it's going to do.  Well, I'll do my best.  That's all I can do, right?

Secondly, I want to apologize for not posting yesterday - I wasn't planning to leave that post up about asking for opinions on posting frequency for three days, but I was still getting comments and I was so interested to hear what people thought, that I decided to let it "simmer", as Kathy from the Junk Drawer calls it.  Anyway, THANK YOU to all of you who left a comment - I really appreciated hearing your thoughts.  Previously I had only been reading what the "experts" thought about posting frequency and I'm glad I asked my own readers what they thought!  Much more enlightening.

I liked the advice many of you gave about how it's my blog and I should just post when I want to, but don't post out of an obligation just to have a post up.  So after thinking it over, and taking into consideration what everyone had to say, I think I WILL just post as I feel like it.  It probably will end up being almost every day.  I'm almost embarassed to tell you I rarely run out of things to talk about.

And for those of you that find it hard to keep up with that much posting, well, if you miss some posts, trust me - there's nothing so earth shattering happening here that it's gonna matter if you miss it.  And on occasion when something "big" happens, I know I usually refer to it in later posts, so presumably you'll catch on.  I empathize though, because I myself read a LOT of blogs, and truthfully, if everyone posted every day or nearly every day I'd be overwhelmed too - I'm actually thankful that most people seem to post 2-3 times a week also.  So, I totally understand that you can't be here every day, waiting on my every word. :-D

I also forgot to mention that I have noticed since I have been posting less my Alexa score seems to have gone down the toilet.

And btw, DH's back finally felt better enough to investigate the dishwasher and he thinks he has discovered the problem.  Luckily and surprisingly it a smallish plastic piece which I would THINK would not be expensive to replace, but I'll keep you posted on that one.  Have I mentioned before GE appliances stink?

So now I'm off to meet a friend for lunch today at Applebee's which has Weight Watcher lunches, so that will be easy, thankfully.  On my way there I have to pick up some home plan books my DH snagged off of Freecycle.  I have to watch him though.  I am all for "free is good", but only if it's something we need.  If I start finding 8 track players, yoga mats, Mac memory or stacks of old issues of Popular Mechanics around here, we'll have to have a talk... :-D

Ok People, I Have a Question For You

When I first started blogging, I used to post about 5 times a week - pretty much every weekday.  Then a few months ago, I decided to cut down to about 3 times a week.  I kept coming across articles that suggested that posting every day (or every weekday in my case) was not the "thing to do", for a variety of reasons.  I thought about it for awhile and decided that I would try scaling back.  Now there have been some benefits to this and I am not exactly regretful of my choice - except for one thing - I have had quite a few complaints!  (Which I totally realize is flattering - that people actually want to read something from me more often.)

So, what do YOU think?  Do you like blogs that are updated every day?  Or do you find it gets too overwhelming to keep up?  I must admit that I myself, like blogs that are updated every day.  In fact, there's a blog I really enjoy that is usually updated like THREE times a day.  (I know she gets an enormous amount of pageviews from people like me checking all day for the next post!)  And incidentally, I really don't mind posting more often, so that's not a problem.

What is your opinion?  Do you like the slower pace of 3 times a week posting, or do you like to read blogs that are updated every day??  Are the "experts" wrong, or what?

What I've Been Reading

I truly love to read, but I end up doing a lot of reading on the computer, however, these are some "real life books" I've read lately....

I don't usually even buy many books - I get them from the library OR I get them from the used bookstore, BUT I saw these when I was shopping at BJs Wholesale Club and I had already been hearing about these books on the news.  They are really quite good, and very visual and easy to read.  I consider myself to be fairly savvy as far as knowing what are good nutritional choices and what are not, but I was in for a few surprises in these books.  The books claim that by making the switches they suggest, you could lose a bunch of weight without even dieting.  It's probably true.  Worth the purchase.

No surprise here for my regular readers.  In case you don't know, we're in the planning stages of building a "cabin" on a small piece of property that we bought in the Adirondacks.  Not a log cabin, but something that will hopefully look "Adirondack-y".  (We don't have like, millions to spend on this - won't be sleeping on Sferra sheets or eating off of Wedgewood!  More like whatever Walmart has. On clearance. Heh.)  It gets confusing after awhile, the plans all start to become one big blur, but I think I've at least narrowed it down to wanting two bedrooms down and one up (rather than two upstairs and one downstairs), AND I think I'd like at least a small loft.  If you have a cabin, don't you kinda HAVE to have a loft?  Well, we'll see what DH thinks.

Speaking of the Adirondacks, Santa brought DD some of these books for Christmas - The Adirondack Kids by Justin and Gary VanRiper, and after DD read them, I wanted to read them.  They are so good!!  I highly recommend them especially if you have kids that like the Adirondacks or the outdoors.  I love to read some of DD's chapter books, I'm sorry but some of them are really quite good!  I've read all the American Girl books we have also, and I really enjoyed them.  Last time I was at the used bookstore I picked up some books by Marguerite Henry (at the excellent suggestion of one of my readers Glitzen, of Saddlepotatoes - link in right sidebar), one of which is "Misty of Chincoteague", and Chincoteague, VA is where we're going for vacation this summer.  I haven't read that book since I was a kid, and I don't think I ever read any of the other "Misty" books, so I'm looking forward to reading those too.

DD is also very into "weather" - tornados especially and she has some cool weather and tornado books that I liked reading too.  :-P  If I ever decide to homeschool the good thing is I'm sure I'd read every book right along with DD!

The end.

Thursday Weigh In

Well, I was good for Valentine's Day.  My Dear-DH arranged for babysitting (thanks Dad!!) and was going to take me out to dinner, but I said how about we save money and calories and just have something nice at home?  We were going to be spending money (and consuming extra calories) at our Daytona 500 party on the Sunday anyway.  So we had cesar salad, large shrimp and cocktail sauce, wine, and I had a Weight Watchers key lime pie for dessert, total of 17.5 points, not bad.

If you look closely in the top right corner you can see Q-ee cat's white paw paws.  He was wanting that shrimp.  Yes, we gave him one.

But then on Sunday was our NASCAR party with our fantasy league players.  Aside from some veggies I put out, and some very tasty and health-conscious turkey wraps my DSIL brought, I may as well have put up one of those cardboard displays saying "Sabatage Yourself Here!"  Because below is a photo of what there all was to eat (you can't see it that well but in the back is a crockpot of cocktail weenies and a crock of sausage and cheese dip).  And it was all SUPER YUMMY.  I know this because I ATE SOME OF EVERYTHING.

And there were three of these (the other two not pictured were pepperoni and "everything", bad!):
By the way, in case you don't live in NY (or the tri-state area), this is was a REAL pizza looks like.

Couldn't tell ya the amount of points I consumed, I'm embarassed to admit I pretty much went hog wild.  Ate so much my stomach hurt.  How stupid was that??  On top of that, I got my butt kicked by my Dad in my first match up in our fantasy league.  By the way, here is the prize for winning the league championship:

The reason we have a tiara is because I won the very first fantasy championship and so my Dad bought me a tiara as the "Championship" prize.  It seemed only right that I pass along the "Championship Tiara" to the next winner the following year.  So we had the tiara out at our party to taunt everyone.  DH is the current tiara holder.  Heh. :-)  (Luckily my family are all good sports!)

So anyway, I had my weigh-in this morning and.... I LOST A POUND!

Wha??

The end.

*I* Don't Have to Worry Even if it WAS a Bear, as Long as I'm Not in Alaska

When we were up at our property yesterday, DH spotted a very large animal footprint.  He was supposing it was from a bear.  Which would certainly not be surprising, there are plenty of bears in the Adirondacks.  As a matter of fact, I saw a bear myself HERE a couple of summers ago (two and a half hours south of the Adirondacks).  Scared the you-know-what out of me.  DD was riding her bike down in the street and as I was watching her, in my line of sight beyond DD, I see a huge bear go running through my neighbor's yard.  I immediately called DD over.  She could tell by my voice that it was no time for questioning or dilly-dallying and we ran at top speed up to the house.  We even left her bike.  I then drove the truck down to retrieve the bike.  Silly, I know, but Hector Heathcoat, I didn't expect to see a bear that day!!

After that I did a lot of research on bears and came to the conclusion that there's likely not much to be afraid of.  The bears around here are black bears, and besides the fact that they are not one of the "bigger" bears, they are generally known as "scardey cats" and pretty easily frightened off.  However, I still did not like the idea one bit that I could inadvertently come across a bear when out walking with DD, or when we're down by the creek at the one end of the property, so I looked into self defense products and ended up purchasing what I refer to as my can of "whoop a$$ bear spray".  Now I just carry that with me and I don't worry.  I even take it with us in the cat stroller!

Now, speaking of bears, I have a blog friend who lives in Alaska and her husband owns a guide service for hunting AND also for viewing the Iditarod (how cool is THAT?). (Btw, her blog is "Saddlepotatoes" - the link is in the right sidebar under "Some of my Favorite Up North Blogs".)  Check out this picture from their business website - now THIS is a bear!!

Photo courtesy of Litzen Guide Service

If you have the time, you have to check out their website, it's really interesting and the photos are amazing!  (Although if you're against hunting, then the website is not for you.)  Have you ever wondered what kind of animals you could hunt in Alaska?  Ever wonder what a guided trip like that would cost?  Ever wondered what it would be like to be able to follow the Iditarod with a small plane to take you from checkpoint to checkpoint?  Do you even know what a "Dall Sheep" is?  (I didn't!)  Go take a look - Litzen Guide Service.

I'm not sure my bear spray would be any match for any of the animals in Alaska! :-P

We Visited Our Property in the Adirondacks Yesterday!

 Our property in the winter!

DD had the day off from school yesterday so we drove up to the Adirondacks and met with a builder we had been talking to.  We also took the opportunity to drive up to our property to see what it looks like in winter.  To be honest, we didn't know if we'd even be able to get to it - we were unsure if the road would be plowed, but much to our pleasant surprise, it was plowed, although I was glad we brought the truck - it was plowed but terribly icy and slippery despite using 4 wheel drive.

In winter you get a teeny bit of a lake view through the trees from our property

(I forgot to get like, the last hundred pics off the camera before the trip, and I kept fearfully waiting for that "card full" message to pop up on me, here of all places, but I made it without having to go through and delete some pics, whew, I hate when that happens! I need to buy memory for it.)

A shot of the famous Sagamore resort from across the water from a place we stopped to look at the lake.

For all the years and years we have been going up to the Adirondacks, we've never gone in the winter, so it was a real treat to see the area in a different season.  Of course we had to also stop in Lake George Village and take some pictures there too - check it out!

Yes those are vehicles and people on ATVs on the frozen lake.

I Taught my Daughter About Drugs at McDonalds

Funny story.  The McDonalds I ate at (see previous posts) is near one of our local high schools, and at lunchtime a lot of the teenagers come over for lunch.  (When I ate there the other day, the kids were all in there with their stacks of textbooks, but not me - I was reading the fine literary magazine "TV Guide".  I miss TV Guide's old small size it used to come in, but unlike Yankee Magazine, I can live with the new TV Guide.)

One day DD and I were sitting by a window that looks out on the plaza next door.  As we were eating lunch we could see kids crossing the sidewalk, and kids milling about over there.  All of a sudden a police car pulls up and starts talking to one of the groups of kids.  Then another police car pulls up and two of the kids are told to sit on the ground - eventually they were put in the police cars and taken away.  DD asked what was going on.  So I explained to her how sometimes teenagers make bad decisions and get mixed up in using and/or selling drugs and I told her I'll bet those kids just got busted for drugs.  (I proceeded to explain more about that but I won't bore you with the details, I'm pretty sure you all know the evils of drugs.  Well I hope you do, anyway!)

I also told her that when she is a teenager I'm going to eat lunch every day at that McDonalds and watch and make sure she's not hanging with the bad kids.  :-)

Just kidding.

Probably.

The end.

We're All Going to Pretend We Don't See the Apple Pie, I Don't Want to Count it

(If you're wondering why the heck I'm posting McDonalds pictures, see yesterday's post)

Yes, I do really feel a lot better - thanks everyone for your encouragement!  Onward!

Thursday Weigh-In = BAD

No change.

I am so discouraged!!!

I don't know whether to cry, bang my head on our tv stands, or go to the pantry and gorge myself.

Well, I AM going to go to McDonald's today for lunch.

I'm getting the Big Mac Meal.

OH YES I AM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'll count it.  BUT I'M GETTING IT!!!!

Between not having a weight loss, DH's back still not better, having to siphon out the @!#$!! dishwasher again, all topped off with a big ol' serving of PMS, IT IS NOT A GOOD DAY!!!!!!

There's a blog I like to visit called Raging Bear Ranch and all I can think of is that's where I should be today - there is this picture in the header of a really angry bear - I *AM* THAT ANGRY BEAR!!!!!!

Yes, lots of exclamation points today - I DON'T CARE IF I'M OVERUSING THEM!!!!!!!!

If you know me in person and see me around town today, for your own good, turn and walk the other way!!!!

THE END.

Wonder No More

Well, in the previous comments Storybeader was wondering how I siphon the water out of the dishwasher, and since I don't want anyone laying awake at night worrying over the draining problem with my crappy GE dishwasher, I figured I'd show you my latest problem solver.

DH was kind enough to show me how to operate the siphon (the thing with the blue squeezy thing) - you just put the straight end in the water, the other in the empty kitty litter bucket and give a few good squeezes on the blue part and voila!  The water siphons itself into the bucket.  Except about a half an inch on water won't go.  That's where the turkey baster comes in - to finish up the job.  (Attention Family Members: I promise not to use this turkey baster for this year's Thanksgiving dinner!)

(Ok, I must also give credit to DH for helping me with this idea - originally I was using just the turkey baster and an empty Cool Whip tub.  Yeah, I know.  He definitely improved on that set up!)

I got to thinking that I believe this is my third ingenious problem solver.  Remember back in the summer I had "the stick", which enabled me to prime the mower so I could get it started on the first try?

And at Thanksgiving time I had devised the "Thrifter" to clear out cobwebs (a Swiffer cloth on a yardstick).

Now if only I could invent something for painless weight loss!!!  Weight Watchers, Decaslim, Slim Fast, etc. - look out!  Heh!

The end.

We're Goin' to Virginnny!

Whew! I am relieved to report that the house was still available for the week we wanted and so we are booked for our vacation in Chincoteague, VA!  This is the third year we chose a house from Cyberrentals.com and it's been a great way to find a place to rent, and it's so much more cost effective than staying in a hotel for 7 people.  Not to mention you generally get WAY more room than in a hotel, you have a kitchen so you can save money by eating in, often there's a washer and dryer which is a nice convenience, often times a deck and a yard, etc. etc.  In the house we stayed in on Cape Cod there was an outdoor shower, which was a big hit.  Last year in Ogunquit the house had a hot tub, which was the big hit.  You know what also was a big hit last year that I would never have expected?  In the livingroom there was a chessboard all set up on a little table with two chairs.  I could not even tell you how many games of chess were played!

It must take a lot of trust to rent out your vacation home.  I think I'd lay awake at night worried the renters were partying and trashing the place.  I wonder what the home insurance is on a rental property?

On another note, you ever have a day where you just feel fat?  Well I am having a day where I feel thin!  I am hoping hoping that means a good weigh-in on Thursday.  I will hold on to that cheerful thought because I have a load of housework ahead of me today.  First thing I have to do is empty the dishwasher, then siphon water out of the bottom.  We've been having a problem where all the water doesn't drain on the last cycle.  I searched online and we think we might know the problem, but DH threw his back out yesterday and is in no shape to be crawling into the dishwasher.  Our GE appliances SUCK.  They are only 6 years old and so far one burner on the cooktop is out, the turntable in the microwave broke, we already had to replace the bottom rack in the dishwasher because it completely rusted, and now the draining problem.

Niiiiiiice.

The end.

We Decided on a Vacation Spot

So we went to my father's for dinner and had a "family meeting" to decide where to go on vacation last night.

(Incidentally, this is the man who never cooked a thing other than breakfast his whole life.  After my Mom died he had to learn from scratch how to cook.  And now he's gotten so good, he's making us dinner!  Smart man that he is, he has discovered Allrecipes.com and made this last night for us: Slow Cooker Chicken Continental - it was SO GOOD!!!  He used "Buddig Beef" though, instead of the jarred dry beef, and he made it with rice.  I can't believe now I'm getting recipes from my father!)

Anyway, it was rather difficult to come to a decision for two reasons. Number one: we had great choices - how to choose from all great ideas?  Number two: it was one of those instances where we all are very nice to one another and no one wanted to say "well I want to do THIS", you know what I mean?  It ended up coming down to my father using a wooden spoon and pot as a gavel, and then we started using the wooden spoon to pass around as the indicator of whose turn it was to talk, but we finally decided on Chincoteague, VA.  My Dad is going to call today to see if the rental house is still available for the times we chose.  If it turns out it's not available and we have to choose another, all I can say is, God help us.

(I was remembering an incident from last year when we were coming back from vacation and we were behind a car with one of the  "X-cargo" type carriers on top.  And yup - you guessed it - it came FLYING OFF going down the highway right toward us.  Luckily DH was able to steer clear of it but now I'm scared to ever follow anyone with one of those.  I don't know how those things attach to a car, but it ought to be with ball lock pins or something easy and secure, rather than the band-aids and chewing gum or whatever that person in front of us had used!!!  Totally dangerous!!!)

Also, our fantasy Nascar draft was last night.  I was actually pretty bummed with my roster, although I did get my favorite driver (Dale Earnhart Jr.).  For any Nascar fans out there, don't forget, the Bud Shootout is tonight (8pm EST) and tomorrow is cup series qualifying for the Daytona.  Anyway, here's my fantasy roster for this year:

Dale Earnhardt Jr.
Ryan Newman
Bobby Labonte
Joey Logano
Robby Gordon
Tony Raines

Well, there are a couple of drivers on there that could be "sleepers", so maybe my team will be better than I think.  The first year we played the fantasy league I actually won and my Dad bought a plastic Tiara for me as the prize.  So of course the next year I decided I should pass on the Tiara to the new winner (who was my BIL).  So now that is the coveted prize for the champion of our fantasy league.  The last winner of the Tiara was DH, so he'll have to go dust it off.

I still can't wait for the Iditarod though!

Happy Weekend everyone!

The end.

Thursday Weigh-In and Other Stuff

A shot of our backyard. I know a lot of you hate winter, but I love winter.

Well I squeaked by with a 1 pound loss this week, which to tell you the truth, I was kinda disappointed about.  I mean I totally know that I should only expect to lose a pound or two a week - which is fine, but, I SHOVELED SO MUCH SNOW AND CHOPPED SO MUCH ICE THIS WEEK and I DIDN'T EAT ALL THOSE "ACTIVITY POINTS" BACK so you'd THINK for all these SORE MUSCLES I could've maybe lost one more pound??  Bah.

So I watched Lost last night.  Any other Lost fans out there?  We've been watching since the very beginning.  This season so far is great.  Last night's episode was really good - wish I could say more but DH didn't get a chance to watch it yet...  We are also Survivor fans and DH just IM'd me that on the TV Guide network tonight is a "Survivor Tocantins" preview at 8pm.  Lost, Survivor and The Office are pretty much the only 3 network tv shows we watch.  The Office is actually my favorite of them all.

Tomorrow the drafting takes place in our fantasy Nascar league.  I studied up on who will supposedly be good this year (no matter what the websites and magazines say, it's a crapshoot anyway in my opinion).  But I do have my favorite drivers and my own little strategies, so I'm crossing my fingers.  There were three drivers I left out all together that I didn't want at all, and I wasn't going to mention them here before the draft in case that changed what anyone else was going to do, but I don't care, I'll admit that I didn't want Jeff Gordon or either of the Busch brothers.  I don't mind Jeff Gordon THAT much but I don't want him on my team.  However the Busch brothers I cannot stand.

In a couple of days we are going over to my Dad's for dinner to discuss summer family vacation plans.  Yes - can you believe we all go on a family vacation together (my family, my brother's family and my Dad)?  And we live to tell about it?  And we do it again?  We have a lot of different locations "in the running" so I'm curious to see where we end up deciding to go.  Although, DH and I can pretty much find fun things to do no matter where we are, so I'm not worried.

Anyone have their summer vacation planned already?  We went to Ogunquit, Maine last year.  In fact, if you'd like a break from the winter doldrums, you can read my posts about our vacation last year and see the pics from Maine here, here and here.  Where are you planning on going this year?

The end.

P.S.  Almost forgot - if you want to see how Kristine and Cindy did on their Wednesday Weigh Ins, you can check in with Kristine at Dr. Mom's Spot and Cindy at Fenced in Family!

More Thoughts Too Short for a Whole Blog Post

Surveys that offer you a CHANCE to win a prize for spending your valuable time giving them information is SUCH A SCAM.

I watched the inauguration and enjoyed it very much, however, although yes, I totally agree that GWB did not exactly leave our country in good order, I think the commentators could have said something about GWB keeping us safe all these years from terrorist attacks.  C'mon, the man served our country for 8 years doing a very hard job - how about taking 10 seconds out of your tirade to mention ONE GOOD THING he did?  Give the man a little respect.

When was the last time you bought Palmolive?  I just bought some the other day and it's totally the same since I was a kid!  That green Palmolive smell brought back childhood memories.  And hey, it's pretty good dish soap!

This is how DH likes his nachos:

I know most men don't really like to spend a lot of time thinking about or planning their outfits, but it cracks me up that DH has a "default" Monday work shirt.

Every now and then I go through my Entrecard "favorites" one by one that I drop on most often and I check to see that they drop back frequently.  If not, then I delete ya.

Weight Watchers Smart Ones Thai Noodles = blecccch!

Tea is my 'go to' snack lately.  I don't put sugar or milk in it.  I drink herbal tea though, which I realize isn't really tea.  I think DH refers to it as "flowers and stems" or something like that.

Attention all aging celebrities:  Please ask Donny & Marie Osmond who their plastic surgeon is, because the two of them must be 100 by now and they look FANTASTIC!

I like the "clunk" my truck makes when it goes in and out of 4 wheel drive.

DD is 10 years old but I still check to see if she's breathing when I look in on her before I go to bed each night.  I know it's silly, I can't help it.  Did I miss the memo where they tell you the age we're supposed to stop doing this?

DH always falls asleep before I do and when I'm not looking or I get up to go do something he sets the sleep timer on the TV for 30 minutes so it shuts off on me when I'm not expecting it.  What is really annoying is that by then he's asleep so my dirty looks and mutterings have no effect.

The deafer my cat has gotten, the lounder she meows.  I totally had NO IDEA a cat could meow as loud as she does.

OK, ARE WE ALL SICK AND TIRED OF THAT HORRIBLE BELLYFAT AD YET??  Where on Earth did they get the money to advertise on every corner of the Internet??  Haven't we all been traumatized by those awful pictures enough??

The end.
