So Cool I Have to Share - Building a Winter Cat Shelter

I rarely just link to someone else's post as "my post", but I saw this on NY Renovator and I thought it was just really cool - I have an indoor kitty, and never thought about how to keep an outdoor and/or feral kitty warm - this might be helpful for some of you out there...

Check out the full post with instructions and pictures at my good bloggy friend Rebecca's blog NYRenovator.com: Building A Winter Cat Shelter.

How cool is that??  Heating pad and eveything!  Awesome!

  1. Cool idea! We leave cat food outside in the winter as there is a cat that comes around who doesn't seem to have an owner. If we put one of those outside, I wonder if he'd use it?

  2. Wow gee I'm honored for the link, Carole! :D Just so your readers know- a heating pad outdoors probably isn't a good thing... our kitty in is our attached (but unheated) garage, so the pad wiring is protected. From what I hear, the Winter Shelter is toasty even without the heating pad.

We also use a heating pad on our bird cage, to keep him warm on very cold days (our house is drafty) or when we are away and the heater is off. It's pretty handy.

Hope you're having a great New Year!

  3. That is so cool! My cats would have realy appreciated that on New Years Eve - the fireworks really freaked them out this time.

  4. Spray foam is actually pretty bad.
Try styrofoam sheets instead and cut to fit with cheap lino tiles stuck on
    (makes it easier to clean)
I have 2 shelters outside, and yes, they do use them. The heating pad should be hanging off the wall though,.. their little bodies can cook if they lay on top of them. The directions on a heating pad is NOT to keep it on you for very long, but the heat generated from off the wall is enough to help.

I read each and every comment, and though I don't always get a chance to respond, I enjoy reading (and pondering) what you have to say. Thanks for your 2 cents! :-)
