Anyone Know of a Diet that Really Keeps the Weight Off??

Ok, ok.  I know *no* diet will "work" - it has to be a lifestyle change.

Ok, so does anyone know of a LIFESTYLE CHANGE that actually makes you lose weight and keep it off, and isn't torture and doesn't involve eating 10 bowls of cabbage soup a day, or diet pills or anything weird?

I have done Weight Watchers countless times now.  It works to take the weight off - I am able to succeed in that endeavor time and time again.  The problem is, the weight creeps back on and it seems like now every January I have to go back on it to re-lose the weight again and I'M TIRED OF DOING WEIGHT WATCHERS.  I just am.  And clearly once I lose the weight, I don't maintain it.  Because I like to eat.  That's the problem ya see.

So here it is January, and I have the usual Christmas Blubber I want to lose and I just don't know what to do this time.  I really don't have the motivation or desire to do Weight Watchers again...but all the other diets I've looked at require you to eat in a way that I'm sure I won't be able to stick to for the long term.

The *only* thing I can think of is to exercise a lot.  But if you know me, you know I *hate* to exercise and I *hate* to sweat.

Quite a dilemma here.

I need some ideas, inspiration and motivation.  I even thought of "bribing myself" with a new purse or new rustic furniture for our cabin if I could lose 30 lbs.  But I don't even know how to lose 30 pounds other than Weight Watchers.... :-/

If you have any suggestions on how you lost weight and kept it off, I'd be interested to hear what worked for you - please share!!

The end.

  1. A few years ago I lost 25 lbs on South Beach and have kept it off by staying low-carb. We eat very little bread, pasta, or any grain and I feel so much better. Everyone is different, but that's what worked for me! The book "Why We Get Fat" by Gary Taubes explains well why carbs are so harmful. I also woul recommend "Wheat Belly." Good luck!

  2. Sadly, I have the same sad story. I used to be such a svelt size 10!!! Working at a computer all day has made me into a blimp!

One that worked for me eons ago (when I had the time) was going on long walks. I used to pack up my two little girls in a stroller and we'd walk about 3 miles a day. I lost a LOT of weight that way. Of course, who has time now, right?

Another friend of mine used to fast every other day. She lost some weight but I moved away so I don't know if she ever made her goal.

I guess a lot of it has to do with food choices. Beer is AWFUL because it converts into fat almost as soon as it passes the uvula. Cheese, breads, pasta, etc = bad.

Still, I like to eat, especially Italian food. Tough choices....

  3. Exercise and watching your calories. I lost all of mine on the slimfast diet. It just incorporates 2 protein shakes or bars into your total calories. I was on a 1600 calorie diet per day with exercise. Viola! 80+ lbs gone and I just watch what I eat now since I don't take the protein shakes/bars all the time now as they are quite expensive. When I was on the study I got coupons to purchase then for free. Losing a couple lbs a week is the proper way to take it off and being able to keep it off per the dietician I was seeing.

  4. Hi, I came over from Erika Jean's blog when I saw your post headline. PLEASE some visit my blog for some inspiration from my son - he recently lost 85 pounds.

GO to my blog and click on the TAB on the top that says TONYS TIPS. There are links to about 25 of his posts about diet and weight loss....

You can also go directly to Tony's new blog and check it out as well. We just started it this week and haven't transferred all his posts over yet, but please check him out...

There are healthy alternatives to losing weight and Tony is proof of it. Come on by!

  5. Carole,
If you find the Holy Grail, let me know! I have 25lbs that need another home, after bringing home 4 kids! Dr. Oz touted this brand of Mango African Mango Burn - The Ultimate African Mango Fat Burning Supplement. Pure Irvingia Gabonensis Weight Loss, Appetite Suppressing Diet Pill
by African Mango Burn. I am waiting for Spring, when I have a sane chance to go walking daily and take the supplement...right now, it would be trudging through snow.... (hey that might be a workout too! Albeit a wet one!)That is my plan... I like the bribing yourself part!

  6. I hear ya!! I have to lose a lot of weight. I was diagnosed with diabetes about 5 yrs or so ago and neglected it until now. I was in denial that I had diabetes. I just went along eating whatever I wanted. Well, a friend of mine, her husband, had a physical and his blood glucose was horrible. I mean really bad. He may lose his job (he drives truck) if he doesn't get his blood sugars lowered A LOT.

That woke me up. I don't drive truck and I have had physicals and blood tests in the past and that didn't wake me up but hearing how high his levels were did. I have been feeling really horrible the past few years and blamed it on some other health conditions but I know that my blood sugars being high was a part of it. High blood sugar makes you very tired, almost as if you have narcolepsy. You are fatigued 24/7. Its hard to get any housework done because you are not up to it.

I thought of how my life will definitely be shortened if I continued to neglect my health. I thought of my husband and how he would have to deal with it all. I thought of my siblings, friends etc and how they would be devastated. I thought of how much I am responsible for my health and to finally man up about it.

For the past 5 days, I have been making better eating choices. I am a chocaholic and its hard but my cravings for junk are not as bad as I thought they would be. What I do is eat small things throughout the day, it keeps my blood sugars in balance instead of drastic highs and lows.

I eat salads, fruit, natural peanut butter, peanuts, sunflower seeds, oatmeal, cheese, vegetables etc. I also still eat meat but in way smaller portions than what I used to eat.
I look at it this way, I can still enjoy eating delicious food but in smaller portions and don't clump it all in one day.

I hope that you find a reason to make healthier choices, its hard I know. I am almost 40 and have been overweight most of my life. I battle chronic health conditions but am trying to make a change.

You can do this!!! It truly is mind over matter!

I read each and every comment, and though I don't always get a chance to respond, I enjoy reading (and pondering) what you have to say. Thanks for your 2 cents! :-)
